==Lyrics==
Resistance was played at almost every date of The Resistance tour mostly because of the fact that it was a moderately huge single off of the album. It has since maintained irregular performances throughout The 2nd Law and Drones tours, though it has been performed increasingly less common throughout the years. Because it is a slower song, it was left out of most of the Drones Festival Tour though it was played very often during the 360 Tour later that year.

Love is our resistance

They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down
They'll keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down
And hold me, our lips must always be sealed

If we live our life in fear
If we live a life in fear
I'll wait a thousand years
I'll wait a thousand years
Just to see you smile again

Kill your prayers for love and peace
Quell your prayers for love and peace
You'll wake the thought police
You'll wake the thought police
We can hide the truth inside
We can't hide the truth inside

Description

"Resistance" opens with piano and drums and has a Queen-esque chorus.[2] Described in NME magazine as having "tribals drums and a piano melody in the style of 'Starlight.'"[3] In the September 2009 issue of Spin, Matt said, "The song 'Resistance' is basically a retelling of the relationship between Winston and Julia," in reference to the two main characters of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. The eerie keyboard layers in the verse of the track also include an Ondes Martenot, an early synthesizer championed by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, as shown in 'The Making Of The Resistance.'

Matt said, "This song started off as an extension of 'Map of the Problematique' with a bit of influence from early 'The Police'. It is very much based on the book '1984' by George Orwell particularly the romance between Winston and Julia and the description of the act of sex and love as something political, the only place offering freedom from Big Brother. The song is also about any love which crosses boundaries such as religion or strong political beliefs and the subsequent recognition of the unimportance and divisiveness of such beliefs."[4]

Information

"Resistance" makes music reference to "Citizen Erased" from Origin of Symmetry, which also draws lyrical influences from Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.

On the 11th January 2010, it was announced through Muse.mu that "Resistance" would be the third single from The Resistance.

The song has been included in a piece of downloadable content for the game "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock." This is the 8th Muse song to feature in a "Guitar Hero" game.

The song has been nominated for 2 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and Best Rock Song.[5]

Recording

The song was one of the first on The Resistance described by the band before recording began, describing it as "sound[ing] a little like ‘New Year’s Day" by U2.[6]

In an interview with Guitar Player magazine (July 2010) Matt revealed that he recorded the guitar solo with the Fender Aloha Stratocaster.

Live

Dom mentioned that the song is one of his favourites playing live, however, Matt doesn't wants to play the song very often because he thinks the song doesn't get the 'reaction' he was expecting the song deserves, however, Dom has convinced him to play the song.[7]
