After researching gigs listed on [http://nocrowdsurfing.blogspot.com/2012/03/21-years-of-post-punk-underground.html#!/2012/03/21-years-of-post-punk-underground.html this web blog] it appears that Muse lost to Honey Sucks in the Battle of the Bands on Jan 23, 1995, not in March. This listing of Exeter gigs shows that on March 7, 1995, Muse played the Cavern Club along with Jacobs Mouse. From the listing, it is presumed that Jacobs Mouse opened for Muse.

The final round of a battle of the bands contest.[2] Muse lost to the Honey Sucks.[source?]

This took place on a Monday, though it's currently impossible to deduce which of the three 1995 gigs in the Cavern this was. If the statements of Safta Jaffery, then A&R of Taste Media, are wholly accurate however, the October date may have been a showcase for him,[3] as that was the only one of the three months—March, April and October—in which the band's members were seventeen. That would leave only March and April as possibilities.

Update

After researching gigs listed on this web blog it appears that Muse lost to Honey Sucks in the Battle of the Bands on Jan 23, 1995, not in March. This listing of Exeter gigs shows that on March 7, 1995, Muse played the Cavern Club along with Jacobs Mouse. From the listing, it is presumed that Jacobs Mouse opened for Muse.
