According to Matthew Bellamy's recollection, there were only ~20 people at the gig. The purpose of the performance was to showcase the band before representatives from Maverick and Columbia Records, including executive Guy Oseary from Maverick and Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols. As a result, Muse gained a recording contract.[2] Assuming the now-defunct muse-official gig database did not miss out a Los Angeles gig in 1998, Rick Rubens was also in attendance and this showcase resulted from two Columbia Records "scout"s noticing Muse performing at CMJ 1998.[3]

The jet lag, at that time previously unknown by Muse, hindered the performance somewhat. Bellamy described them as having been "half asleep" on stage.[2]
