John Gourley AKA Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man are an American rock band, based in Portland, Oregon and originating from from Wasilla, Alaska. The band is comprised of the original and only permanent member, vocalist and guitarist John Gourley, and his wife, drummer Zoe Manville, with various touring musicians joining them during live shows.

Portugal. The Man originally started in the early 2000s as Gourley's side project, after being in a now-defunct band, Anatomy of a Ghost, together with Portugal. The Man's co-founding member, Zach Carothers as the bassist. The two took Wesley Hubbard, former Anatomy of a Ghost guitar tech Nick Klein and Harvey Tumbleson on board, forming the band. They moved from Alaska to Portland, Oregon and proceeded to record demo tracks in 2004 while going on tour in the same year. After the tour, the band underwent lineup changes with Tumbleson and Klein's departure, before the release of their debut LP, Waiter: "You Vultures!" in 2006. Through the years they've continued to gain popularity and underwent several lineup changes with Manville joining in 2008. The same year, Gourley was chosen as 2008's "Best Vocalist of the Year" by Alternative Press. Portugal. The Man also worked with aritsts like Mike D from Beastie Boys, who produced their 2014 release, and Yoko Ono on her album in 2016. Their 2017 album, Woodstock, produced by Beastie Boys' Mike D, contains their biggest hit, Feel It Still, which reached the top spot on Billboard's Alternative Songs while becoming a Top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, aswell as winning them a Grammy award in the "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance" category in 2018, and an iHeartRadio Music Award for best "Alternative Rock Song" in the same year.

Portugal. The Man are set to support Muse in 2026, during the August leg of the North American run of amphitheatre shows for The Wow! Signal tour, between August 10th and August 31st, joined by The Temper Trap.
