Muse were invited to perform at the British leg of the global warming awareness events entitled "Live Earth".[1][3]

Matthew Bellamy said that the only way they would be able to get to the event would be to hire a private jet, as they were scheduled to play Oxegen the same day.[4] He said that they are "probably" going to get together with Snow Patrol and a "couple" of other bands who will be in Ireland on the same night and go on a "normal" plane together.[4]

Bellamy also stated on BBC 6 Music that that it seems hypocritical to support an event that could have an opposite effect on the climate. "Private jets for climate change, not sure about it that seems to be a bit on edge really – that’s an issue really, so we need to think about it!".

The official Muse website confirmed on the 1st of June through a news item that Muse would not be participating in the Live Earth concert.[3] Along with the confirmation, the news item also stated that the band didn't think "carbon [dioxide] offsetting" would be an effective method in reducing greenhouse gasses.[3]

Bellamy later confirmed that they didn't participate due to the "complete" hypocrisy of using a private jet to get to the gig.[5] Bellamy criticised "big American bands" for not only using private jets to get to the concert, but each member of said bands using separate private jets.[5] Muse could have got to the concert, so that was not the reason preventing them from participating.[5]
