Nürburgring

Nürburgring is a race track situated in the town of Nürburg in Germany. It features a Grand Prix race track built in 1984 and a longer "Nordschleife" (North Loop), built in the 1920s around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel mountains.

The track was completed in 1927, hosting the ADAC Eifelrennen races, and in 1929, the last place, utilizing the whole racetrack, took place as future Grand Prix would be held only on the Nordschleife while motorcycle and other minor races used the safer and shorter Südschleife (South Loop).

After World War II, racing resumed, and Nürburgring again became the main venue for the German Grand Prix as part of the Formula One World Championship. In the early 1970s, Nordschleife was reconstructed by taking out bumps and smoothing out sudden jumps and installing Armco safety barriers, generally improving the safety for the drivers. Despite these modifications, it was still possible for cars to become airborne off the track. Additionally, the venue was unsuitable for the TV market as its expanse made it almost impossible to effectively cover the race there. The lack of safety marshalls also arose concern amongst the drivers. In 1981, work began on a new circuit which was built around the old pit area. The new track was completed in 1984 and named GP-Strecke and was built to meet the highest safety standards. The racetrack last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 2013, before F1 returned to Nürburgring in 2020.

The Nordschleife is also known for having public access ever since 1927; the so-called "Touristenfahrten". Anyone with a road-legal vehicle can buy a ticket and drive through the track with crashes being a regular appearance with those found responsible for damage to the track or safety barriers required to pay for repairs.

The track hosts the Rock am Ring festival. The original festival was hosted to celebrate the re-opening of Nürburgring in 1985, though due to its success, the festival was made annual (with an exception of 2015 and 2016, aswell as the upcoming 2022, when it will be hosted at the Mendig Air Base in Mendig, Germany) and has continued to become one of the most popular music festivals in Europe and the World. Since 2017, the racetrack is also the host venue for the New Horizons EDM festival. In 2015, the venue would've hosted another festival called Der Ring - Grüne Hölle Rock, but was relocated to the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, due to problems between organisers of RaR and organisers of Der Ring.
