Muse performed inside The Roudhouse on the 30th of September, to promote the release of The 2nd Law. This gig, which was the last of iTunes Festival 2012, replaced an earlier gig scheduled to take place at Battersea Power Station.

Tickets were available through three competitions, one which took place through iTunes, one at muse.mu, and another held on 3fm.nl. The performance was webcast on the event's website and the stream could be watched either live or, for a limited time, afterwards.

Four times in the gig, Bellamy added words into the lyrics. Those four songs were "Time Is Running Out," "Knights of Cydonia," "New Born," and "Plug In Baby."
The first one consisted of Muse standing on London Tower bridge and footage of a sound check. The sound check was recorded first, after which the director suggested going to London Tower bridge. The bridge footage was shot during a rush hour, with people walking towards the band members who were themselves standing still looking at the camera. Matthew Bellamy was standing on a box, with an earphone in one ear. Looking back on the video in 2005, Bellamy and Dominic Howard thought the video embarrassing. In 2012, when asked about their 'biggest regret when looking back at their whole career', one of the members answered 'making our first video for UNO.

The second is of the band playing and a girl trying to reach the band through a labyrinth of doors. After a while, the girl finds a door through which Bellamy appears to stand. Through the door is actually a corridor with a deep pit. After she bursts through the door, she is able to avoid falling. The end of the video has the girl facing a door with '1' on it.
Description
Doom-drenched operas full of newsreel reports from the end of civilisation, rapping Terminators, trumpets inflating like lifeboats and Exorcist piano pulses tinkling goodbye to the globe. "It's the noise of humanity on a tiny planet in the middle of nothing," says Matt. "Hanging around space would be so peaceful and quiet and suddenly you come to this little blip that's f-----g chaos!
When earlier describing the album on twitter Matt was possibly referring to 'The 2nd Law: Unsustainable' as 'ambient rebellious dubstep'.
The piece starts with an orchestral section with choral emphasis, that gradually builds up to a climax. During a build up, a female voice reads the above text, at the end of which, a heavily effected, vocoder-style voice enters with the word 'unsustainable'. A dubstep-style section follows, utilising pick scrapes, Twisty Kaoss Pad, KAOSS Pad manipulations and other sounds typical of Bellamy's guitar style, backed with drums and bass and fragmented repetitions of the word 'unsustainable'.

This song has been used in the official trailer for The 2nd Law.

The song is a unique mix of classical music, progressive rock and dubstep.

After the first 'Dubstep' breakdown, the song goes into the heavier drum beat, featuring a Whammy guitar, mildly distorted bass and a loop of the robot sound. Matt's voice is momentarily featured, but the song's 'lyrics' are narrated by Katie Razzall, a channel 4 news reporter, and the robot voice.

Information
By error of Bellamy, Howard, Wolstenholme or Kirk, the name of the song was leaked by a photo on Twitter, until it was deleted.

On 4th June 2012 Matt tweeted the following text:

All natural and technological processes proceed in such a way that the availability of the remaining energy decreases.
In all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves an isolated system, the entropy of that system incre, cre, cre, cre,c,c,creases.
Energy continuously flows from being concentrated, to becoming dispersed, spread out, wasted and useless.
New energy cannot be created and high grade energy is being destroyed. An economy based on endless growth is...

With the missing word being "Unsustainable".

The song appears to feature in a trailer for The 2nd Law, released on 6th June 2012, making it the first song released from The 2nd Law.
According to Matt he is 'just gonna go mental on the Whammy pedal' on this song.

On 13th July 2012, Muse tweeted the same picture with Dom and the names leaked in a board, but with the working titles replaced by the new album tracking list. During the recording process, the working title was "Unsustainable".

The song's music video, featuring the full song has been made downloadable on August 9th, 2012, when buying the Deluxe Box Set of The 2nd Law on muse.mu.
Description
'Save Me' is one of two songs on the album written by Chris about his alcoholism, the other being 'Liquid State.' He described the song as being about "having the family, the wife and the kids who, despite all the crap that I've put them through, at the end of it you realise they're still there and they're the ones who pulled you through."
According to an NME article it is the first song with Chris on main vocal duty, along with 'Liquid State.' Chris said, "I don't think I expected to sing it when I showed it to the other guys, but it was approached with a pretty open mind. They felt it was a big step for the band." Matt added, "I was into it because they were songs that were personal to him. It's like this new guy - the last time I remember meeting this guy was about ten years ago. He seems to be so energised about everything. I think he almost feels like he's woken up."

Chris also said that "'Save Me' is a sort of a love song and I think it's the more positive among the two, it's about having a difficult time and having a person in your life who can pull you through - my wife, in my case. I guess it's all about searching stability, finding it through the person you love."
In an NME article, the song was described as 'stadium stomp' and being about the world being in "meltdown."

According to previews of the album, Big Freeze is a surprising song with funk elements while retaining a 'Muse-y' sound.

In the chorus, you can hear similar vocals to Map Of The Problematique. The song has been compared to U2.
|Healed, or are you still just reeling?
Are you fine? Have you found a way to escape?
Are you here, just because I need you?
Can we hole up, a big freeze is heading our way.

We are on a hiding to nowhere,
We still hope, but our dreams are not the same.
And I, I lost before I started,
I’m collapsing in stellar clouds of gas.

Hear me. What words just can’t convey.
Feel me. Don’t let the sun in your heart decay.

Fight, or will you show me mercy?
We’ve expelled, the goodness from our hearts.
Are you here, just to prove you’re winning?
Can we hole up, and ride out this electrical storm?

We destroyed something beautiful.
We have faith, but our truths are not the same.
Don’t give up, don’t let the magic leave us,
Stop the loneliest force becoming king of the universe.
Description
A song lamenting dying crops and abused nature, inspired by Matt's concerns of industrial greed and business monopolies. 'Explorers' is drenched in the sense of not belonging in your own world. Nearly called 'Alien Explorers,' Matt claimed, but "not in the way of aliens from outer space but in the way of feeling like an alien on your own planet. It's about the intense desire to grow and expand - at some point nature will become the minority. I'm not sure if I'm really coming from an environmental thing - [Explorers] is where I'm singing about my views on property rights. The idea that corporations can own vast tracts of foreign countries. I'm not sure if the deal went through but, I think it was in Paraguay or Uraguay, the Bush family bought something like a million acres of land, which underneath contains the biggest natural water reservoir in South America. At some point there has to be someone who says: 'That's not right.' Can BP buy Nigeria? At the moment they can. They could buy it and they kick all the natives out, shoot them down or whatever and just say, 'We own this now.'".

According to Jeuxactu, a French magazine, Matt's vocals evoke similar feelings to the song Blackout.

In the chorous, you can hear similar vocals to invincible.
Description
In an NME article the song was described as being "flamenco-flecked." When earlier describing the album on Twitter, Matt was possibly referring to 'Animals' as 'face melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia.'

'Animals' is about economies collapsing under the weight of stock market savagery, of industries desperate to "advertise, franchise… kill the competition," and of the greed of bankers who Matt claims should "kill [themselves]." Matt says: "This song is conjuring up the rawest form of that feeling of 'look what humans are capable of doing, it's shocking.'"

According to Jeuxactu, a French magazine, the song has a fast beat, and while heavy riffs seem expected, the song has a simple, short guitar solo.

'Animals' is Muse's first full song written in 5/4 time signature (the outro of Agitated is also in 5/4). 'Animals' also features Muse's first use of polyrhythms, where in the final section of the song, the Drums have a 4/4 time signature, while the remainder of the instruments continue with a 5/4 time signature. The song closes with screams, calls, bells and applause in the midst of the stock market.

Matt said in an interview with 1Radio that this song was influenced by a Queens of the Stone Age song that has a 5/4 time signature (Most likely Hangin' Tree).
He also said Animals is the hardest song to play live off The 2nd Law due to having to play lead guitar and sing at the same time.

The piano riff bears similarity to Exile Vilify by The National.

This song has been compared to flamenco-guitar artists and Queens of the Stone Age.
The beginning of the track features Bingham Bellamy's heartbeat, recorded on Bellamy's iPhone. According to Bellamy, the song will be about 'having a baby and that.' This was later confirmed in an NME article where the song was described as Matt's 'ode to fatherhood.'

According to a French magazine, Jeuxactu, the song starts quietly and crescendos into an almost dancefloor beat with big bass. They have also stated that the track is "out of the ordinary."
The band collaborated with Nero on production to help create a more successful electronic mix of the song.
On the 27th of June 2012, Survival was announced as the official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The song was premiered on 27th June 2012 by Zane Lowe on his BBC Radio One show at 7:30pm along with a short prelude which was followed by an interview with the band.

Recording
The song was initially conceived in August 2011 when Matt was approached by a "top pianist," Sir Elton John, to create a collaborative song for the 2012 London Olympics.

According to the French magazine, Jeuxactu, this song has a "bounding bassline." They've also said that Panic Station is very likely to become a radio hit.

This song has been compared to Prince, Talking Heads, and David Bowie.

Information
By error of Bellamy, Howard, Wolstenholme or Kirk, the name of the song was leaked by a photo on Twitter, until it was deleted.

Trivia
Panic Station is one of three studio recorded songs with swearing in it (Crying Shame and Hidden track). It also marks the first time Matt has sworn on an album track.
Description
'Supremacy' sees the band going to "absurd levels," according to Matt. Spiralling swamp blues of the track builds to a climax of orchestral hysteria as Matt orates a terrifying scene of mankind losing its supremacy over the Earth as "the seas have risen up" and energy shortages cause global desperation.

According to a French magazine, Jeuxactu, the song has elements of "Kashmir" from Led Zeppelin in its guitar riff and orchestration.

During the post-Madness debut interview on Radio One with Zane Lowe, Matt said the song had a "big 7-string riff."

This song has been compared to Led Zeppelin and a James Bond theme tune.
On March 30th 2012, a rumour started on-line, spreading through most of the social networks like twitter and facebook and, naturally, most Muse forums and fan-pages. Apparently, an excerpt of Supremacy had been leaked, revealing roughly 30 seconds of the song. The vocal version can be found here . On April 1st 2012, the leak was confirmed to be fake, an April Fool's Day joke organised by Facebook page Coro Happy B-Day M. "You've had a fight with your girlfriend and she goes off to her mum's house for the day and you're on your own going: 'What did I say?'" says Matt, describing the song's inspiration. "I'm sure a lot of blokes have that experience in the early stages of relationships where you go, 'Yeah, she's right, isn't she?'"
I, I can't get these memories out of my mind
Is swallowing me whole, yeah
What you mean
Now, I need to know is this real love
Or is it just madness
Keeping us afloat, mmmm
When I look back, at all the crazy fights we had
It's like some kind of madness
Was taking control, yeah
Now, I have finally seen the light
And I have finally realised
What you need
Random Question Generator
Are you a gambling man?

"I gamble a little bit but only really with poker. I gambled when we were in Vegas, we play poker on the bus and I'll play against my mates. I'll happily frisk my mates for a few quid but it's nothing too serious."

Have you ever cried at a Disney film?

"I think I cried watching 'Bambi' when I was about three years old but I can't really verify that because I was only three."

Do you tend to get recognised in supermarkets?

"Supermarkets are the most random place to get recognised and to be honest that doesn't usually happen. It did once, though - I was buying cereal and it was all a bit embarrassing. They were looking at my trolley to see what food I'd picked off the shelf. I don't generally mind getting recognised, though, especially if it's just someone who wants to say, 'Hello, I like your band'."

Does the band to use pseudonyms to check into hotels?

"We certainly have done although I've recently scrapped it 'cause I got sick of doing it. But I was called Sergio Georgini, which is taken from the second series of 'The Office'. There's a bit where Gervais starts trying to look the same as his new boss and so he buys this leather jacket. His boss' is Armani and when he's asked what make his is, Gervais goes 'Sergio Georgini'. That amused me for days and so I did use that name for a while on our last tour."

When was the last time you were starstruck?

"Probably meeting David Bowie in the studio when we were recording the album around November last year. He just popped in to say hello, really - I think he liked our band but he also wanted to meet (producer) Rich Costey as well. That was pretty surreal because when he came in he said, 'Oh, the last time I was here I was recording something with John Lennon'. He was a nice guy, though - we'll have to send him a copy of the album."

Do you believe in God?

"Not in the traditional sense but I believe in some weird untold energy that surrounds the planet and the universe and brings weird harmony to life."

You've just stolen that from 'Star Wars'...

"No. Well, maybe. It's actually a pretty common belief, though."

What's your favourite conspiracy theory?

"Probably that the human race has evolved the way it has done because we get impregnated by aliens. There's a lot of gaps in evolution between Neanderthal man and modern-day humans and apparently the aliens came down and altered our genes to make us what we are today."

Would you be Bill Gates' bitch for three days in exchange for half his fortune?

"(Laughs) That depends entirely on what being his bitch would entail."

Know any good drummer jokes?

"What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine? You only have to punch the information into a drum machine once."

Black Holes and Revelations' is out now on Warners

Random question generator
Where in the world would you like to visit?

South America, definitely. We've never been there but hopefully are going there on the new album. Rio de Janeiro and Brazil in general would be amazing. It would be nice to check out the rain forest while it's still there, too.

Have you ever been in a school play?

I did a monologue if that counts? I played a blues singer who does a Robert Johnson song. I got an A* for drama! I also played the part of Christmas tree when I was in infant school. I had a cardboard cut-out of a tree painted green stuck on me and was just wheeled out onstage to stand there like a tree for the whole thing. My first public performance...

Who would play you in a movie about Muse?

Oh dear, I have no idea. Someone skinny, maybe someone English. But definitely not Hugh Grant, he's got a bit more sheen than me, hasn't he? Actually I think I'd like to be played by that Welsh guy from 'Twin Town' (Rhys Ifans). He looks nothing like me, but he's pretty good.

Have you ever ordered anything from an infomercial?

Yes, actually. When I was about 14 we got 'Sky TV' and I think I ordered something called 'Mega Memory'. It was some sort of cassette tape course to help you improve my memory that I bought to help me with exams or something. It didn't work. It was rubbish.

When was the last time you were ejected from a bar?

I think it was around the time of 'Song 2' by Blur and I was down in Devon with my old mate Jake, who I used to do painting and decorating with. He ended up having a bit of a different life path to me. Anyway, one night we went out to a dodgy club called Timepiece in Exeter that played dance music, but they also played 'Song 2' and because we were drunk and it was the only song with a guitar riff we started a mosh and got a bit rough on the dance floor. The next thing we knew this massive picked us both up by our necks at the same time and threw us out the door. It was classic nightclub ejection scenario.

What was the last film you walked out of?

One of 'The Matrix' films - the second one. It was the one in which there is a scene where the all suddenly go underground and start dancing. It kind of turns into a sort Ibiza beach scene at which point I thought 'What a shame...', and promptly left.

Money or love? Discuss

Of course, love is far more important. And money can't buy it - well (laughs mischievously), it can buy some of it. The strange thing about money is that when you gain it doesn't actually really change the way you feel about anything. You buy some bits and pieces you thought you wanted and realise you don't really need them after all, or they don't really change anything. Yeah, love is far more important. That stuff's forever.

Can exes be friends?

That's a tough one. I think they can, yes, but I've not managed to sort that one out. I only have one real proper, long-term-relationship-type ex, and we've not spoken since we split up, which is a shame. I kinda feel like I should.

What message do you have on your answer machine?

Fart noises. I don't know why.

Q&A MUSE

If it’s symphonic pieces and robotics you’re looking for this summer, Matt Bellamy will be your man.

Presumably muse were offered slots at various UK festival. Why pick V?

We’ve been a bit cursed when it comes to the V Festival. The last time we did it [in 2004] Chris [Wolstenholme, bassist] wasn’t playing as he’d broken his wrist, and there have been other little things that have gone funny for us. So we don’t feel we’ve quite nailed it yet. V is a nice festival, the whole vibe there is quite family orientated, and it’s more of a summer’s day out than the muddy, lairy backstage you find at Reading or Glastonbury.

You lost your virginity at the Reading Festival, didn’t you?

Er, yeah. My memories of festivals as a teenager all blur into one. There was a lot of alcohol and a lot of… loose experimentation in tents. When you’ve got a tent at a festival it can be the first time you feel like you’ve got your own place, and I’ve a lot of memories of weird things going on. Everyone’s away from home for the first time and it feels like you can make up your own laws.

A bit like Lord Of The Flies?

Yeah, it really is, but in a good way. Ideally, people don’t turn into savages and start killing one another; they take a bunch of magic mushrooms and have a good time.

Do you miss that kind of freedom now that you’re in a band?

Well, being in a band allows you to have a certain amount of arrested development, so some of that fun is still there. Even old tigers like The Rolling Stones would probably say there’s a part of them that still feels 15 or 16. That’s when you’re the most naïve, most optimistic and most creative, so it’s good to hang onto that.

What was the last really daft thing you did?

We hired a bouncy castle in Las Vegas for a party and decided to dress up as aliens. Peoople definitely lost it there. That was the last time I did mushrooms, actually. Dom [Howard, drummer] had a dog mask on and he ran off into the desert, and I ran after him, and for a minute I was actually in a Salvador Dalí painting: if you look at his painting The Elephants I was the little person at the bottom of those elephant’s legs. I’m not really in favour of drugs, but setting aside one day a year for hallucinogenics definitely opens up new doorways.

Will you be bringing the alien costumes to the V Festival?

Probably not. But we’ve got a few things lying around from the Wembley Stadium shows that we might dust down. And we’re got new ideas to do with robotics, but we’ll probably save those for the future. We’ll do at least one spectacular thing—maybe something that goes over the crowd. But then we always say these things and Health and Safety always shoot them down. Hopefully we’ll play a couple of new songs, too…

…and five minutes later they’ll be online to download.

Yeah, spread right across the net for people to judge. I’m not too bothered about that. The songs will likely change radically when we record them.

How are the new Muse songs shaping up, then?

We’re currently working on a 10-minute symphonic piece, and I’m really into Timbaland’s production at the moment, so we’ll find something more beats-based, too—not necessarily like Supermassive Black Hole, but another surprising genre-shift song.

Any simple songs?

Yes, it won’t all be so far out. We always just forget to talk about the straighter songs, like Starlight. There’s always going to be songs that are just good songs.

Do all those Best Live Band awards that Muse keep winning put pressure on you to make the live show even bigger?

Well, apart from Wembley, the gigs that stood out for us last year was one we played in Christchurch, New Zealand, and one in Belgrade, because we didn’t have production for either. WE were surprised how intense it was, with the audience really watching us rather than “the show”. So in the future we’ll try to vary things, mixing up stripped-down shows in smaller venues with the monster gigs.

You live on the shores of Lake Como in Italy. Over there are you “Matt from Muse” or “that English guy who can’t speak Italian very well”?

Ha ha. The second one. My Italian is alright, I can hold myself together around the town now. But no one knows who Muse are. Nic [Cester, frontman] from Jet is out there too and I hang around with him, but we’re both pretty anonymous.

Will you be hosting any parties on your yacht for the local glitterati?

No, the glitterati of Como are on a completely different level to me. I’m a pauper out there. It puts me in my place. I’d get doges set on me if I tried to go to those parties. [Fellow Lake Como resident] George Clooney takes care of all of that.

Have you set yourself any personal goals for the coming summer?

I’d love to win a ranking poker tournament. I’ve been playing poker for years and I really enjoy it. It’s like a really strong mind game. I can hold my own against the pros now. But the Las Vegas tournaments are oversubscribed. Apparently, the entry fee is like $20 000, and the winner takes most of it. But it’s not about the money for me, so maybe I’ll win in Lithuania.
