Description
"Plug In Baby" was Muse's then most successful song when it was released as the lead single to Origin of Symmetry in 2001. The song has remained popular and widely recognised ever since its release and has been played at almost every Muse concert since it was premiered in 2000. Originating before the release of Muse's debut album Showbiz, it was the only song to be latterly revisited from Muse's large repertoire of early demos for recording, after undergoing some significant changes.

The song was originally about a protagonist's interaction with virtual reality, though the lyrics later became abstracted such they no longer explicitly explored this theme, leaving the song open to a wider interpretation, as indeed the band themselves have taken.

According to Matt, he wrote the song above a sex shop, "It sounds made up, but it was written above a sex shop." so, it's more likely that song talks about a sex toy.

Matt and Dom came up with the title while flicking through a catalogue, Matt found something about plug-ins and decided to name the song like this, according to Matt 'it just sounded cool for a song'.

Composition
Plug In Baby is an electronic rock song written in B minor. It's guitar-driven, and moves at a fast tempo of 135 bpm. The guitar riff is heavily based upon the B minor harmonic scale, with a few accidentals. Similar to Showbiz, the song begins with a simple rhythm and builds, before climaxing with a very high vocal note.

Bellamy's vocal range spans from C♯3 to F♯5, one of the wider ranges in a Muse song.

Additional information
In an interview with James Matheison at the [V]HQ, Bent St, Sydney, in 2004, Matt momentarily forgets the meaning of Plug In Baby.

Fan: Umm, hi. This is going back a bit, but the song "Plug In Baby" - what is that about?

Matt: Ah, shit. (laughs)

Dom: You're on now.

Matt: Umm... (laughs) Uh, I can't remember now. (Dom and Chris laugh at Matt) Umm, what is it? I read- I read some book about like- uh, I don't know what it was. Something to do with, umm... co- like, uhh... bo-bots, kind of... dunno, can't remember anymore, hold on. What was it? My plug in baby, uhmm... I'm so- I'm sorry, I don't know. I can't remember. Sorry.

James: Was it about you, uh, travelling around the world, and you've got-?

Matt: It's- It's all random, it just comes out- I mean, it's random, I've got no idea what I'm singing about at all, sorry. It's just like- It's just kind of like, write a few chords and that, and then just... improvise a few words, and just hope it means something. It does mean something! Trust me. But I can't work it out myself. 'Cause I'm subjective, you see. So I can't actually quite work it out, that's for you lot to work out. (laughs)

James: It doesn't have anything to do with when you're travelling the globe and you have trouble, uh, finding powerpoints-

Matt: (laughs)

James: -that'll fit your walkman, or the like?

Dom: If you want it to be. (smiles)

James: Well, it is for me, then, I guess!

Dom: (nods and grins) Cool.

Howard: "That song’s about putting emotion into something that has no soul - like a child’s teddy bear or a computer. And also what it would be like if we could genetically engineer puppies that never grow old."

Bellamy: "I think the chorus is probably referring to some kind of analogy of the touring lifestyle, of what it feels like being on stage playing or whatever it might be, but kind of saying that really, I'm prepared to pretty much sacrifice everything in my personal life for the sake of playing music."

Due to the multiple - and often contradictory - interpretations of the song's meaning, fans generally interpret it subjectively.

Although on the album Origin of Symmetry the song begins with a crossfade from the end of previous track "Hyper Music", the version found on the single contains a 'clean' introduction. Likewise, the single version of "Hyper Music" has a clean ending.

Italian fencer Matteo Tagliarol suggested the song aided him in the attaining a gold medal during the 2008 Olympics, stating "I listened to 'Plug In Baby', of Muse, just before entering the field. I'm going to put the disc close to the medal!" in an interview minutes after winning. As Maverick wished Matt to tone down the falsetto on the song, Muse left the label and "Plug In Baby", as well as the rest of the album, remained unreleased in the US. It is unknown if Muse did re-record "Plug In Baby" and whether this version still exists.
In early live versions, Bellamy would sing something similar to this:
{{lyrics

A benefit show, happening outside of the North American Summer Amphitheatre Tour. It's also Muse's first intimate by-request show.

Information
Confirmed by the band on Annie Mac's show on BBC Radio 1 on July 3rd, 2017, Muse played an intimate gig at Shepherds Bush Empire. The show was in aid of The Passage, London’s largest voluntary sector resource centre for homeless and vulnerable people. The last time Muse played on this venue was in 2013.

The show was by request, ticket holders were able to choose their top ten tracks and all votes submitted were be collated and used to make the setlist for the night.

Presale for fan club was available on July 5th at 9AM and general sale on July 7th also at 9AM.

Glorious and Showbiz audio was released by Muse as a 2017 Christmas present.

The gig's gallery was uploaded to muse.mu and can be seen here.
Song information
* Easily was played for the first time ever. Matt commented that he loved the track, and said that it only missed being on Black Holes & Revelations due to being written too late.
* Glorious was played for the first time since 2005. Dom introduced the track by saying he's been trying to get Matt to play it "for 7 years".
* Showbiz was played for the first time since 2006. Matt stated that the track won the voting "by a mile" and that it "might be back", implying it could be played at later shows - which turned out to be true.
* Sing for Absolution was played for the first time since 2007. Matt said that he was surprised that the song was in the top 10.
* Assassin opened a show for the first time since 2007.
* Yes Please was an abbreviated version - first verse and chorus only.
* Muscle Museum, Showbiz, Fury, Sing for Absolution, and Futurism were all played half a step down.
* New Born was played for the first time in 2 years, and was notably faster than usual.
* The performance of Munich Jam had the fastest ending up to this day.
* No songs were played that were released after 2006.
* Last performances of Easily, Glorious, Sing for Absolution, Futurism and the full version of Dead Star to date.
There was no printed paper set-lists available. Rumor had it, that it was intentional to surprise the attendees and to not leak the set-list before the show starts. Therefore, it is not known if Muse had Yes Please as a separate song entry on the set-list or if it was part of New Born's outro.

Voting
Since the show is by request, ticket holders were able to vote for what songs will be on the setlist. Since the announcements, multple Reddit threads and Facebook groups were made to help choose which songs. A well-informed and constructed thread was made on Reddit about how to vote carefully for rare songs.

On July 11th, 2017, ticket holders received emails about the gig and its vote. Each ticket holder received a link to Set the Set, a website where you can vote for songs for the setlist, and a unique code to validate your choices. You could vote for songs in a pre-determined list of 62 songs on the website, at first. Some songs were surprisingly omitted from this list, like Uno, Blackout or Apocalypse Please, which were played recently in 2015-2016. This was due to an error by Set The Set when uploading full list of available songs . This error also caused a side-effect where it would automatically add New Kind Of Kick to your vote list when you would pick Easily. This was fixed the next day, on July 12th. After fixing and adding the missing songs, the list had 83 songs up for voting.

Some songs that were never played live or haven't been played for more than 10 years, were on this list aswell, like Invincible, Showbiz, Do We Need This, Nature_1, Map of Your Head, Easily, Glorious and Eternally Missed.

Song Choices
Bold are songs that were never played live. Italic are songs that haven't been played since 2012. Both bold and italic are songs that haven't been played since 2006.
Rehearsals and soundchecks
On August 1st, 2017, at Burgettstown KeyBank Pavilion, Muse sound-checked Fury, Showbiz and Assassin before the gig according to Dominic Howard on an interview by iHeart Radio, that was posted the very next day. A video of Fury sound-check was posted on Muse's Instagram. While there was and still is no proof, Dead Star and Glorious were allegedly sound-checked as well, but since all sound-checked songs ended up being played at this gig, it is likely that this sound-check information was true. None of the sound-checked songs were played later at that gig.

On Aug 18, 2017, Muse posted pictures and video of their practice sessions for Shepherds Bush Empire gig on Instagram Stories. Included in one of the images was a blurry setlist. The Italian Musers Do It Better Facebook Page group Photoshopped the blurry image to come up with some of the songs they believed would be played. All of them were part of the setlist.
|-
| Before Easily
| "This next song actually we have never played live before and we actually never played it together as a band. Because when we recorded it, it was bass and drums first, and then I did the vocals and the guitar a bit later. So this is the first time we have ever played together. Of course we rehearsed it, fucked it up a few times, but, yeah, let's see where we go. It's also one of my favorite songs!"
|-
| After Easily
| "Yes! I don't know how it didn't get to the album, I don't know how that didn't make it to the album. I think, was that just after Black Holes or was it Absolution? Can't remember. When did we do this song? I can't remember. I think we did it on the road, on the road somewhere. I know it was, Black Holes just had come out and we were a bit late to get it on the album. Anyway, love that song."
|-
| Before Glorious
| style="text-align: center;" | Howard
| "How's it going, Shepherd's Bush? It's a real pleasure to come and play for you guys tonight in this awesome venue again, I guess we played in this venue four years ago, it was so good we had to come back. As you probably know all the proceeds for tonight are going to the charity The Passage which is amazing charity doing wonderful job, helping homeless people in London and keeping them sheltered, finding food and stuff like that. So yeah, everything is going to them tonight, so thank you for coming! We gonna play one of mine favorite songs we have been trying to get Matt play for about seven years or so. We are gonna give it a shot, see what happens."
Moderation
The board is moderated via a points based infraction system. Once a member commits an infraction by breaking the board rules or otherwise, a moderator can issue an infraction or a warning. An infraction carries a number of points and both infractions and warnings have expiration dates, all depending on the severity of the infraction. Accumulating 4 points or more results in a temporary ban. Some infractions carry over 4 points and will instantly result in a ban.

Permanent bans can be issued after multiple temporary bans or if the account is owned by a user who already has an account.

Holiday media
The forum sometimes hosts either media or features during holiday seasons, for example in Christmas 2004, videos of the Earl's Court concerts were hosted.

For Christmas 2007, an advent calender was hosted which included in-jokes from the forum's community as well as references to well known members. The door for the 25th of December linked to a video of Fury from the 2007 Australian tour.

Development
On the 21st May, A new subforum was added to the 'News' forum, entitled 'Muse need you..', containing several polls ranging from topics such as social networking, to release formats, HD media and communcication between the band and the community. and name Muse used for their first gig, a battle of the bands in their local sports centre, Broadmeadow Sports Centre in Teignmouth. The name was used for this gig only.

At the time, the band were liaising with a group of girls who co-wrote their music. These girls dressed the members up and applied makeup, the resulting look of which Matthew Bellamy later described as similar to the Cure.

Unlike the bands which Bellamy, Dominic Howard and Christopher Wolstenholme were members of before the Rocket Baby Dolls, in this band the music performed consisted largely of original compositions. Bellamy described it as "experimental" and "noise". Despite their inability to play music, they won the competition.

According to Bellamy the origin came from "some dodgy... Japanese porn film". The actual film in question is an independent American documentary of fetishes told through vague plot in a science fiction setting. The film had airings on late night television around Europe, one of those likely being watched by Bellamy himself.
*Additional Information
::What the song is about, miscellaneous info
Song previews
I'm currently investing in having song previews on each page, I can either do it using last.fm's radio player or with a more neater looking flash module but I'd have to host the files and all. I'm very tempted in the latter since I've got quite alot of bandwidth at my disposal now so yeah. The quality should be about 60kbps for 30 seconds, that or we can even reduce the seconds and add more quality to it. Suggestions folks, I've done a demo on Apocalypse Please so you can check that out, its only the lastfm one for now but soon Ill add the other demos --crazybobbles 15:16, 18 May 2007 (BST)

Subcatagories
Remixes should be in the subcatagories section, and the sub catagories really dont need to be listed by letter. i would fix it myself but i cant work out how/ if i can :P --Wilfio 16:08, 20 March 2007 (GMT)
:also should there be subcatagories for B sides and singles?--Wilfio 17:18, 20 March 2007 (GMT)

Live
there could be a 'last performed live' bit under the song title. i dont know how this could be implemented but it something i have always wondered about. -wilfio
:[Don't know how old this message is etc.] A good idea but could become impratical when Muse a playing a gig every few days. I suppose if we used "active" or something to show currently played songs like SBH and TIRO ۞ 21:16, 13 March 2007 (GMT)
Burning Bridges is under S. I'd edit it myself if I could.

Templates
I've created a basic template as my first (minor) helping-out on this wiki... as I've said, it's basic, but it should work to keep the songs pages looking trim until somebody better at this kind of thing can jazz it up in a craazy Muse style :-) Karma Llama 22:12, 4 March 2006 (EST)

Demo songs
Feed, Sling, Backdoor, and Jigsaw Memory - Muse's demo songs, need to be added to the database as well as a mention of that demo.

I've moved the above moved from the category page --Tene 15:41, 1 August 2006 (BST)

The songs on the demotape page link nowhere - should we create song pages for them? This seems like the right place for them - whether they've been released, played and/or heard or not, they're still Muse songs I suppose. Plus apparently Matt still plays a riff from Sling at some gigs ۞ 10:04, 22 August 2006 (BST)

I don't understand why Song pages haven't been created for the songs yet... Easily got a song page created as soon as it was heard of, and it hasn't even been released yet. These demo songs have been confirmed and should take priority. How hard can it be to create a song page? No worries though, I created a website dedicated to that very demo, "This Is A Muse Demo" now. =)
:This is a wiki, you're a member, do it yourself. Don't expect the regulars to do everything, chip in. --Tene 12:32, 24 August 2006 (BST)
Unrecorded and abandonned songs
I have a list of sopngs use played in battle of the bands contests, and of songs that were never recorded:
*Small Minded
*A Turn to Stone
*Yellow Regret
*Weakening Walls
*Pointless Loss
(These were all mentioned on the MUSE13 promo CD)
Among other unreleased songs/alternative titles are:
*Electro Empire (alt name for futurism)
*Origin of Symmetry (maybe an alt name for something...)
*Apolitical (alt name for darkshines)
*OOS Intro Riff
*A rerecording of Plug in Baby

So...what shall I do with this info. The dmeo tape songs were added, would it be ok to add some of Muse's/RBD's even older songs? ۞ 01:36, 18 September 2006 (BST)

Disambiguation
I don't know is this is the place to ask this. If it isn't, just tell me. Why don't create a page with each song that have videoclip and single (for example, Bliss)? That article could be called "Bliss" and be a disambiguation article, with Bliss (song), Bliss (video) and Bliss (single). What do you think? --Susurr0 21:50, 16 September 2006 (BST)
Capitalisation
A comprehensive guide to capitalisation in titles resides here ... In summary, Plug in Baby should be Plug In Baby, and Time is Running Out should be Time Is Running Out, as both 'in' and 'is' in these contexts are verbs. I suggest changing them to such when editing pages for other reasons ... Unless someone wants to go nuts and go through the entire list of mentions. --Tene 17:45, 29 November 2006 (GMT)
:I'll happily go through the gigs and media sections and check all those.--Jakalope 12:19, 21 March 2007 (GMT)

Seperate categorgy for random riffs
If it a good idea to seperate random riffs muse play at gigs from actually recorded full covers and original muse songs? It seems a bit excessive to me creating a new song article every time Matt randomly plays a riff from some random song he's listening too ۞ 21:16, 13 March 2007 (GMT)
:Makes sense. In the same vein, how about moving the songs they played at Battle Of The Bands or whatever to their own categroy? That way the songs category is just songs that have been recorded by Muse.--Jakalope 12:18, 21 March 2007 (GMT)
::I don't think we should have too many categories. I suggest one new umbrella category: unrecorded. --Tene 15:24, 21 March 2007 (GMT)

It bothers me a bit that things like the videography have special, customized pages and yet the page for songs is a simple category page. That's a bit lazy if you ask me, so would anyone object if I made a page for songs similar to the discography? 7 02:06, 4 January 2008 (GMT)

I think the songs should be in charts separated by era, like so..
Black Holes and Revelations Era
7 02:34, 4 January 2008 (GMT)

Sounds like a good idea. The current songs category is quite unorganised (all kinds of songs mixed together), so a separate page specifying album tracks, non album tracks, live versions etc. in different eras, like you've suggested, would make sense. ۞ 03:11, 4 January 2008 (GMT)
Matt Bellamy songs
In light of Matt's contribution to the The International soundtrack, should we create a new category called "Matthew Bellamy songs" for those Matt (but not Muse) has contributed to? Seems like they should be on here somewhere - and the OST on part of the discography, but not under this category. Besides, a solo project probably isn't too far off and this isn't likely his last OST contribution. ۞ 19:36, 22 February 2009 (GMT)
*Additional Information
::What the song is about, miscellaneous info
*Alternative versions
::Info on any alternative versions to the standard (album/b-side) release
*Lyrics
::Lyrics and alternative lyrics
*References
::List of citations
*See also
::Link to any other related songs

Unrecorded and abandonned songs
I have a list of sopngs use played in battle of the bands contests, and of songs that were never recorded:
*Small Minded
*A Turn to Stone
*Yellow Regret
*Weakening Walls
*Pointless Loss
(These were all mentioned on the MUSE13 promo CD)
Among other unreleased songs/alternative titles are:
*Electro Empire (alt name for futurism)
*Origin of Symmetry (maybe an alt name for something...)
*Apolitical (alt name for darkshines)
*OOS Intro Riff
*A rerecording of Plug in Baby
Disambiguation
I don't know is this is the place to ask this. If it isn't, just tell me. Why don't create a page with each song that have videoclip and single (for example, Bliss)? ==Capitalisation==
==Seperate categorgy for random riffs==
A surprise was organized by fans. Several visuals related to Muse and made with thousands of sheets raised by people were formed at the beginning of Supermassive Black Hole. After the show, a message was sent by Tom Kirk to Muse Messenger, french official fanclub :

Hi there.
Yeah it was great. Brilliant show, and the signs looked great.. You saw that I put them up on the screen right? It looked brilliant. Great job. I hope to use it and put it on a DVD one day...
Description
Part of the double A-side single with "In Your World" released in 2002 as a stop-gap between albums. Played sometimes during the tour promoting Absolution including at Earls Court on the 19th.

Contains metal influences, with a repetitive bass-line that the guitar mimics. The lyrics and melody are extremely distorted, with strange twisted snarls between. Like many of Muse's earlier work, the respiratory noises have been left in (as in "New Born").

Additional information
"Dead Star" was written alongside "In Your World" shortly after the September 11th attacks in America.

Matt:

"I sort of got into that kind of thing, looking into space and all that - bit embarrassing, really. I'm a bit of a Star Trek fan in secret, but don't tell anyone (laughs). The song is about, let me think, it kind of how everyone reacted to the 11 September thing. We were in Boston at the time, we got stuck there, and that's when we recorded those songs. So, in some ways, the lyrics are a little bit about the hysteria around that time and how people were really quick to point fingers at everyone else when they should have pointed fingers at themselves."

Live
When played live in 2001, before the cd recording & release, the songs verses were mellow, with Matt playing chord arpeggios on a clean guitar setting, Chris playing the main riff on a clean setting & Dom playing a simple beat using the ride cymbal & snare. On the cd version, the verses have a heavier attack, featuring thumping drums played on the floor toms & distorted bass playing along with this beat. Matt also plays the same arpeggiated chords heard before, but with distortion & delay effects.

Dead Star was played regularly between 2001-10-04 and the last 2002 gig - Carling Weekend, Leeds. It was played occasionally between 2003-2004, the last performance of which was at Earls Court, 2004-12-19. The solo started to be played an octave higher compared to on record and previously live, with the Carling Weekend 2002 dates.

On its return on the 16th July 2008 for the South American Tour, however, the solo was back to its previous pitch. Also with the return came a new synth part, played by Morgan Nicholls throughout the verses and that replaced the guitar part & Chris shouting the chorus.<ref name="ml20080718">
Lyrics
Shame on you
For thinking
You're an exception
We're all to blame
Crashing down to Earth
Wasting and burning out yeah
Fading like a dead star, woah woah
Harm is coming your way
Yeah it's coming your way

You used to be everything to me
And now you're tired of fighting
Tired of fighting,
Fighting yourself

Shame on you
For thinking
You're all alone
If you want I'll make you wish you were
Failing to impress
Why can't you sleep with
Someone who'll protect you, yeah
Harm is coming your way
Yeah it's coming your way

You used to be everything to me
And now you're tired of fighting
Tired of fighting, of fighting yourself
Yourself, yourself, yourself

Fighting yourself, fighting yourself, fighting
