Adagio in G minor was actually composed by Remo Giazotto based on Albinoni's Sonata in G minor. A fragment of the Sonata was found admist the ruins of the Saxon State Library, Dresden, bombed by the Allies in World War II. but had been written years before, having been played at both the Budstock and Plymouth Festivals in 1997. The song was recorded at the same session as Ashamed and Yes Please, but was not issued on any Showbiz singles, even Sunburn where the other tracks surfaced. It was carried over to Origin Of Symmetry and remixed for inclusion, but was removed as the band did not want to have too many entirely guitar based songs on the album.

Additional information
Six different interpretations:
#An affection for someone that has gone too far.
#A song about God, saying how he isn't even listening to what people are saying i.e. in their prayers.
#Another leader who is destroying the world, such as in Take a Bow.
#About a person who, despite his hard work to the world around him (trying to be #1), he is not acknowledged. Now he is in a rage. He now blames the world for his failure and has plots to create havoc and destroy the world around him to set things right.
#About talking to the mirror, talking to yourself. Blaming yourself for all the bad things that have happened to you. Looking at the thing you've become-old, broken, cold; and this person is made by the world around you.
#A rejection of the fashion of environmentalism ("sick of trying to please you"), personifying the Earth as being cold and uncaring; it kills people with earthquakes it cannot even feel so "why should I?" (engage in environmentalism). That the world has gone so wrong, Nature itself is a disaster.

Live
Despite the fact that the song was written during or before 1997 very few live performances of this song exist. Of the two known 1997 setlists it appeared in both of them, possibly indicating the song was often played during this year. After then, however, the song was primarily played at acoustic gigs in 1999 and 2000. In 1999 the song is believed to have been played at least in November at two gigs. At the November 9th gig Matt claimed that the song was played for the very first time there, although this is impossible considering its early appearances. It was likely that he meant the first time it was played in its finished state.

After these November appearances there is no confirmed performance of the song until late 2000 when the band began preparing songs that would later be used during Origin of Symmetry sessions. The song was revived for an acoustic performance on October 15th 2000 and was played at every gig with an identified setlist from then on until the end of the year. Although it was not played after 2000, given the song's persistent appearance in later 2000 gigs it can be assumed that the band expected it would make it on the album.
|Conforming on a Monday
Too often and too cold
But you aren't even listening
'cause you are just
Too old to feel an earthquake
Or too cool to even care
But you aren't even listening
So why should I?

You are a natural disaster
And I've wanted you too much
And now I'm gonna lose
I've wanted you too much
And now I've gotta choose
You're the cause of all this
And I'm sick of trying to please you
Yeah
And you're gonna feel my emotions coming
Yeah
Because you're the world

Like a broken dam you're empty
And all that's left are the sticks and stones
That were built by other people
And it really shows
But you aren't even listening
Because you are just
Too old to feel an earthquake
Too cool to even care
But you aren't even listening
So why should I?
In a interview at Pure FM, the broadcaster said that Matt has been rehearsing a new "riff", and asked to Dom if that "means that a new single will be released sometime soon before the new album", to which replied Dom saying that they are not going to release something brand new this year 2013 and that they are going to be back into the studio in 2014 to record their seventh album.

Composition
Plug In Baby is an electronic rock song written in B minor. It's guitar-driven, and moves at a fast tempo of 135 bpm. The guitar riff is heavily based upon the B minor harmonic scale, with a few accidentals. Similar to Showbiz, the song begins with a simple rhythm and builds, before climaxing with a very high vocal note.

Bellamy's vocal range spans from C♯3 to F♯5, one of the wider ranges in a Muse song.

Additional information
In an interview with James Matheison at the [V]HQ, Bent St, Sydney, in 2004, Matt momentarily forgets the meaning of Plug In Baby.

Fan: Umm, hi. This is going back a bit, but the song "Plug In Baby" - what is that about?

Matt: Ah, shit. (laughs)

Dom: You're on now.

Matt: Umm... (laughs) Uh, I can't remember now. (Dom and Chris laugh at Matt) Umm, what is it? I read- I read some book about like- uh, I don't know what it was. Something to do with, umm... co- like, uhh... bo-bots, kind of... dunno, can't remember anymore, hold on. What was it? My plug in baby, uhmm... I'm so- I'm sorry, I don't know. I can't remember. Sorry.

James: Was it about you, uh, travelling around the world, and you've got-?

Matt: It's- It's all random, it just comes out- I mean, it's random, I've got no idea what I'm singing about at all, sorry. It's just like- It's just kind of like, write a few chords and that, and then just... improvise a few words, and just hope it means something. It does mean something! Trust me. But I can't work it out myself. 'Cause I'm subjective, you see. So I can't actually quite work it out, that's for you lot to work out. (laughs)

James: It doesn't have anything to do with when you're travelling the globe and you have trouble, uh, finding powerpoints-

Matt: (laughs)

James: -that'll fit your walkman, or the like?

Dom: If you want it to be. (smiles)

James: Well, it is for me, then, I guess!

Dom: (nods and grins) Cool.

Howard: "That song’s about putting emotion into something that has no soul - like a child’s teddy bear or a computer. And also what it would be like if we could genetically engineer puppies that never grow old."

Bellamy: "I think the chorus is probably referring to some kind of analogy of the touring lifestyle, of what it feels like being on stage playing or whatever it might be, but kind of saying that really, I'm prepared to pretty much sacrifice everything in my personal life for the sake of playing music."

Due to the multiple - and often contradictory - interpretations of the song's meaning, fans generally interpret it subjectively.

Although on the album Origin of Symmetry the song begins with a crossfade from the end of previous track "Hyper Music", the version found on the single contains a 'clean' introduction. Likewise, the single version of "Hyper Music" has a clean ending.

Italian fencer Matteo Tagliarol suggested the song aided him in the attaining a gold medal during the 2008 Olympics, stating "I listened to 'Plug In Baby', of Muse, just before entering the field. I'm going to put the disc close to the medal!" in an interview minutes after winning.

Recording
The band were apparently on hallucinogenic mushrooms when they recorded it. The 1997 studio demo of "Plug In Baby" lacked the main riff of the song although there were numerous similarities in the lyrics and structure of the song. "Plug In Baby" was to be re-recorded under the wishes of Maverick to coincide with an US tour promoting Origin of Symmetry. As Maverick wished Matt to tone down the falsetto on the song, Muse left the label and "Plug In Baby", as well as the rest of the album, remained unreleased in the US. It is unknown if Muse did re-record "Plug In Baby" and whether this version still exists.
Taking its cues from Mariachi bands and the 'Doctor Who' theme tune, the track sounds like a soundtrack to a spaghetti western set in the far reaches of the galaxy and features a chain-smoking trumpeter called Franco. The intro features sounds of horses neighing and galloping, as well as laser guns firing. Standard set opener and closer during the Black Holes and Revelations tour and standard set closer during The Resistance tour too.
Howard: Matt was at the back of the bus in Arizona, repeating the jerky riff to death, outside we could see the desert rolling...all that went very well together. Galloping horses, Texas, trumpets etc. We wanted to depict a journey, to make it sound like Joe Meek.

The intro of the song, especially Bellamy's guitar, is significantly influenced by the sound of The Tornados' hit single, Telstar, of which Bellamy's father, George Bellamy, was the rhythm guitarist. Bellamy has even stated, regarding the similarities, when asked about them: "Absolutely... in the guitar sound. We were aware of that when we were making the album. My dad's band mainly played instrumental music, and I always wanted to bring some more instrumental elements into our albums, to have more abstract moments. On the opening part of that song, we made a conscious effort to make the guitar sound like a 1950s synth, one of the first synthesizers around, that they'd used for the sound of the 'Telstar' bit. That was deliberate."

Wolstenholme has described the song as "40 years of rock history in six minutes".

Matthew Bellamy
"The idea for Cave came from that rubbish American book, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. There's this bit about how men go into a cave when they get stressed and I think that's probably true, although, personally, I tend to let it out. I did have a bit of a tantrum in my hotel bathroom last night - but I managed to repair the toilet, so that's OK."

On a performance of the song at Melbourne ABC Studios in 2000, Matt says at the beginning of the performance that the song is "About an old friend of mine...he's not a friend anymore".

"Cave" is featured in the soundtrack for the film Little Nicky.

A live favourite on the tours between 1999-2001. Bellamy disliked playing the song live due, firstly, to it being an old song and, secondly, to the chorus being difficult to sing. Despite this, it was played for the first time in 8 years at Teignmouth and following gigs a half step down on piano instead of guitar.
|Leave me alone, it's nothing serious.
I'll do it myself, it's got nought to do with you
And there's nothing you could do.

You can see it and you can almost hear it too,
You can almost taste it, it's nought to do with you
And there's still nothing that you could do.

So come in my cave
and I'll burn your heart away.
Come in my cave,
and I'll burn your heart away.

Please close your ears and try to look away
So you'll never hear a single word I say
and don't ever come my way.

Leave me alone, it's nothing serious.
I'll do it myself, it's got nought to do with you
And there's still nothing you could do.

So come in my cave,
and I'll burn your heart away.
Come in my cave,
and arrest me for my mistakes. Yeah.
